In order for there to be equal citizenship in the U.S.,Lalami says that first, equal voting rights must be extended to all regardless of “race, class, gender, region, or other markers of identity” (161). This includes prisoners and those with felony records. She goes on to say that all citizens should have access to equal “rights to education, healthcare, a living wage, safe drinking water, and clean air” (162). Equal citizens, says Lalami, should also have the right to “physical privacy” and be allowed the “freedom to make medical decisions about pregnancy, abortion, and end-of-life care” (162).
