In "Faith," what does Lalami say about Muslim history in America? When did Muslim's first arrive? Why? How were they treated?

Lalami writes that Muslims came to America long “before the founding of the United States” (36). She adds that about “thirty percent of enslaved people who were brought over the next two centuries were Muslims from West Africa, who were forcibly converted and given new names” (36). Because Muslims were barred from practicing their religion and there was virtually nothing written about enslaved Muslims, the Muslim religion was essentially erased.
