To keep swimmers safe, a wire mesh net was being constructed from sea bottom to high-tide level in the Asbury Park area. After a man patrolling in a boat in that area was attacked by the shark, swimmers were too afraid to stay in the water. That section of the beach was immediately closed. Even sections of the beach that were protected by the mesh wire were soon abandoned by frightened tourists. Therefore, the mesh netting was never truly tested.
