What is the general belief about the great white by the twenty-first century? How does this compare to the views of great whites in 1916?

By the twenty-first century, the image of the great white has been somewhat softened by its characterization as a mysterious and misunderstood creature. Benchley, the author of "Jaws," pleaded for the life of a great white that had killed a young swimmer in Australia. He declared that rogue great whites do not exist, despite how the animal was depicted in his novel. In 1916 many believed that great whites were not dangerous to humans. Today they are seen as misunderstood, although very powerful and dangerous. In 1916, many wanted to kill these sharks, but today many want them to be protected.
