Who is Valentine from City of Bones and what is their importance?

Valentine is Clary's father and Joceyn's estranged husband. He initially formed a group named The Circle. The group's purpose was to overthrow the Clave. When Valentine failed at his task, he faked his and his son's death and disappeared. He plans a comeback to finally overthrow the Clave.
