How does the author use foreshadowing in City of Bones?

In Chapter Fourteen, Raphael moves his head just enough that a scar is revealed on the base of his neck. When Clary sees this, she wonders how he got it, foreshadowing the fact that Raphael is a vampire posing as mundane human.
