Who is Bessie Coburn from Christy and what is their importance?

Thirteen-year-old, Bessie Coburn, is Lety and Kyle's daughter. She excells in school, contracts typhoid.... and survives, and then goes onto to nurse Lety after she is infected by typhoid as well.
