Controversy seems to always surround Christopher Marlowe and his works, but he was properly a man of his time...and often frustrated by it. The Elizabethan Era was steeped in religious dogma and doctrine and anything that challenged it or seemed to suggest ideas not in keeping with the tenants of the church were met with all sorts of penalties. Marlowe did as many did writers of the day....wrote innuendo very well, suggested without coming out and saying so....though at times he crossed the line and spent time in jail.
