Zelie, the novel's protagonist, is described as strong and fiercely independent. She has firm beliefs and opinions on the subject of right and wrong, and is highly moralistic. She dislikes anyone who sways from her idea of a righteous moral path, and can often be aggressive and cruel to those who do not live up to her standards.
