Amari is a sweet and naive girl who does not understand the world outside the palace because she has never been exposed to it. Once she realizes the extent of the horrific conditions her father has placed the Majis in, she becomes set on restoring magic to the world and liberating them from their oppression.
Throughout the course of the novel, she comes to realize that in order to change her world, she must destroy her father and take his place as queen. In the end, she does just that, finally obtaining freedom from the man who made so many lives miserable by killing him with the sword he taught her to use.
