One major theme in the novel is that of identity, specifically, cultural identity. When Casey arrives in China Town, she is completely ignorant of her Chinese heritage. Over the course of the novel, she finds herself in a school where she doesn't understand the language, which serves to make her an outcast, but she also finds the history of family tradition and a sense of belonging.
