Who is Johannes Vermeer from Chasing Vermeer and what is their importance?

Johannes Vermeer painted The Lady Writing. Very little is known about his life, and several of his paintings are said to have been painted by others but signed under his name, so that those owning the paintings to sell them for more. The thief says in his letters he wants the wrongs done to Vermeer to be corrected.
