When Charlie finds a dollar bill in the snow, he goes directly into a nearby shop and promises himself that he will buy only one bar of chocolate and that he will bring the rest of the dollar directly home to his mother afterward. His entire family is literally near starvation, after all. Instead, Charlie buys one bar unaccompanied by a golden ticket and eats it, but he then buys a second bar. It is this second bar of chocolate that contains the golden ticket, sending the message that one should trust one's own intuition and throw caution to the wind in order to allow good fortune to happen.
