Catherine's father has a toothache. A Spanish physician is called, who says it is a problem of excess blood. The physician cuts a vein in her father's tongue to fix the problem. When this doesn't work, he says that they need to smoke the problem out but he accidentally sets his beard on fire. Her father decides to go see a tooth puller in Lincoln, and Catherine goes with him.
