What is the symbolic significance of the cathedral in Carver's Cathedral?

The cathedral, or the drawing of the cathedral, is symbolic of man's need to be able to visualize and imagine. The blind man could see.... not literally, but with his mind. The narrator, however, is unable to see past his own superficialities.... until he is force to close his eyes and discover what lay behind them.
