Living conditions at Perpignan are appalling and dangerous to the health of the prisoners. The cells are dark, wet, and too small to stand up in. There is no light. The toilet consists of a bucket that is rarely emptied, so the floor is normally covered with feces and urine. The food provided to prisoners is very minimal, just bread, broth, water, and sometimes weak coffee. Prisoners are not given the opportunity to bathe.
