Who is Mandras from Corelli's Mandolin and what is their importance?

Mandras is the young fisherman, who asks the Doctor's daughter to marry him. Before the wedding, he goes to war and is presumed dead until he returns nearly insane. Mandras eventually runs away to join a resistance group and becomes a dictator officer. He is later shot and killed by the woman he once loved.
