Eugene Marchbanks is a young, weak, helpless, and effeminate poet. Morrel finds Marchbanks sleeping outside near his home and proceeds to take him home and give him shelter. Before you know it, Marchbanks is madly in love with Morrel's wife, Candida. This is the basis of the play.
