Why does Marguerite go into the woods with the children? Why does Caleb leave them alone?

Marguerite asks Caleb to lead her and the children into the woods so that they might gather witchhazel, a plant used medicinally for multiple ailments. Caleb guides Marguerite and the children to a field where the plant grows and then leaves them alone so that he might do some hunting.
