Why do the children need to be cleaned up? Why do they protest?

Marguerite is told by Dolly to clean up the children so that the neighbors will not think that she does not take good care of her children. The children complain, however, because they have not been bathed in a long time and it takes a great deal of scrubbing for Marguerite to get them clean.
