What work does Joel take on by himself when Ira and Caleb go away on the Fortunate Star?

Joel is forced to clear the fields for planting alone while Ira and Caleb are gone on the Fortunate Star. The pressure to plant the fields early enough to have a good harvest forces Joel to work harder than he would have done with more help.
