What happens to the cow and her calf when they are put in the water to swim to shore? Who rescues them?

When the cow and calf are dumped over the side of the ship in hopes they will swim for shore, they swim the wrong direction and get caught in the strong current of the channel. Marguerite thinks quickly, jumping into a skiff and guiding the cow and her calf to the nearest shore, which happens to be the shore of Sunday Island where the Jordans live.
