What does Marguerite go out into the fog to gather in Part 4? What happens when she does?

When the food runs out and the Indians continue to prowl around the farm on Sargent's Point, Marguerite gathers the cloth she had been saving for a special piece of clothing for the children or their doll and makes a Maypole. Marguerite dances the Maypole and teaches the Indians how to do it, appeasing their curiosity for a time.
