Who does Eddie encounter in a field in the end of Chapter 9? What epiphany does he have?

He treks across an open field, where he happens upon the black man who sold onions at Cuca's restaurant. As the chapter closes, Eddie has an epiphany and realizes that he is no longer a child and that he will make if just fine as an adult.
