What happens along the way to the military base in Chapter 9?

Eddie gets a ride to the naval base in an old beat up van with other new recruits, but the vehicle breaks down in the middle of nowhere. While they wait for someone to come pick them up to take them the rest of the way, Eddie goes for a walk.
