What causes Eddie’s sense of fear in Chapter 1?

Because many people are killed each day over ridiculous issues, such as the color of their shoes, Eddie is constantly in fear of his life. When someone calls his name, he is often afraid to turn around to see who it is, afraid he'll be staring down the barrel of a pistol.
