What causes Eddie to flee from Holmes playground in Chapter 5?

While Eddie is doing the lines for Coach, Samuel and some of his friends flash knives at Eddie as if to threaten him. When Eddie realizes that the "little punks" are waiting to fight with him, he begins running through people's backyards towards his godmother's house.
