What had been Anders's reason for memorizing poems?

The narrator states that Anders does not remember a single line from any of the poems he had memorized "in his youth" (36). However, the narrator does say that Anders's purpose had been wrapped up with wanting to be able to give himself "the shivers at will" (36).
