The early part of the bank robbery is portrayed almost in a cartoonish manner, a mood underscored by Anders's finding every aspect of it quite hilarious. However, at one point, the man with the pistol has repeatedly told Anders to be quiet, but Anders again comments aloud about the scene. Just then, the woman in front of Anders tells him, "Please be quiet" (18). This is the first time Wolff draws attention to the fact that everyone in the bank is in danger, especially if Anders continues to antagonize the bank robbers during their task.
