Wolff uses a visual chain reaction of sorts to reveal to the reader the nature of the story's main conflict. Anders is still tormenting the woman in front of him with his sarcastic comments, when she appears to be staring past him while saying "nothing" (6). Then the narrator states, "Anders saw that the other woman, her friend, was looking in the same direction. And then the tellers stopped what they were doing, and the customers slowly turned, and silence came over the bank" (6).
