Repetition is employed in the final lines of the story to great effect. The narrator has described the details of Anders's only available memory during his final moments of life, having painted a picture of Anders's fascination with the regional dialect of an acquaintance's Southern cousin. As Anders walks out to right field to take his position, he smacks his baseball mitt and "softly" murmurs, "They is, they is, they is" (41).
