Though there have already been a significant number of troubling developments by the time Anders smells the breath of the man with the pistol, it is only this strange detail that causes Anders to be described as "beginning to develop a sense of unease" (20). The instance of irony is meant to underscore the gap between how Anders should be reacting and how he is reacting.
