The chapter ends with... How Does the author convey that she does not mean to hurt her father?

The chapter ends with the introduction of Kim and Scott, and their questioning of Bud. I'm not sure what you're referring to in regard to "hurting her father". Are you referring to the teasing between Kim and Mr. Lewis?
