How much do missionaries need to be immersed in a culture before they can effectively share the gospel?

Missionaries must be educated in the culture of the people they wish to minister to, or their ministry will be for naught. If a missionary cannot relate to the people, his/her words mean nothing. If he/she cannot try to understand their lives and circumstances, he/she cannot lead an effective ministry.
