Why do the brown girls feel like going away to college is like going to Mars?

For the girls who leave the dregs of Queens for college, their new homes feel very foreign, as if they had traveled to Mars. The campuses are neat and tidy and look like they could be in an architectural digest. Many of the other students are elitists, so the brown girls do not fit in and do not like many of their classmates.
