In “Duties,” the narrator says the girls are ten and already know how to be good. By good the narrator means that they can safely cross the dangerous main road, help their siblings with homework, be respectful of exhausted fathers asleep on couches, clean and care for the home, and give up their own rooms and beds for visiting family friends and relatives.
