How does life change for the girls who attend the public arts school?

In the chapter called Art, the narrator says that the girls have sung in church choirs, taken ballet classes at the Y, and taken free after-school art lessons. Now as high school students they are specializing in various art forms, spending at least 20 hours per week in art classes.
