The author creates conflict in Magda and Jeremy's relationship so the reader may make comparisons between single life and married life. Through Magda, Bridget is able to see that being single allows her certain freedoms that she would not have if she were married. Magda's life also show that being a Smug Married has its own set of challenges and risks. Also, as Magda and Jeremy's relationship worsens, Bridget is better able to appreciate the fact that no relationship is perfect.
