The climax of the book comes during Bridget's dinner party for Mark. She receives a phone call from her father. He tells her that her mum and Julio have run to Portugal after defrauding their friends in a time-share scam. Bridget and Mark leave immediately for her father's home. This is the climax because it is the point at which the characters and relationships change. Bridget must become a responsible adult for her parents' sake. It is also a turning point in her relationship with Mark. After the phone call they will either be together or fail miserably.
