Who is Wolves from Brian's Winter?

The wolves are Brian's constant companions in the woods. They circle his camp often, and over the course of the novel, Brian is able to obtain small bits of food from the animals they leave behind.... the meat they have no removed from the carcasses. The wolves serve as a reminder that nature is harsh and dangerous.
