Who is David Smallhorn from Brian's Hunt and what is their importance?

David Smallhorn is Susan's father. David and his wife Anne live in a summer camp on a small island at the head of a lake when the bear attacks. David apparently tries to reach his gun, but the bear kills him before he is able to fire.
