Who is Sam Uley from Breaking Dawn and what is their importance?

Sam Uley, the Alpha of the La Push werewolves, wants to kill Bella and the abomination when he learns she is pregnant. This causes Jacob to break off and form his own pack. When Jacob imprints on Renesmee, Sam supports the Cullens and is even ready to fight the Volturi to protect Renesmee.
