Sunshine Falls serves as a symbol of small towns and is meant to mirror the setting of a romance novel. It fits with all the tropes, such as failing stores that the main characters can fix up or attractive men who dream of running farms or working for their towns. It is the exact opposite of New York both literally and figuratively, for Nora sees it as stifling while Libby imagines a much more free future.
