What happens to the colonists' store of corn in Chapter 14?

In Chapter 14, Richard sets out to get breakfast of the usual hominy (coarsely ground corn cooked in a communal pot), and comes back declaring that the corn is gone. Soon after, Samuel realizes that all of the gentlemen have gone, too.
