Who is Nathan Rahl from Blood of the Fold and what is their importance?

Nathan Rahl served as the Prophet in the Palace of Prophets for centuries. He is traveling with Annalina and disappears at the end of the story, although Annalina doesn't know how Nathan was able to remove his collar.
