Why is Sunday a polarizing day of the week for the Marez family?

Sunday was church day for the Marez family. Antonio's mother, Maria, was a devout Catholic and attended Sunday Mass regularly. Antonio's father (Gabriel) would work half the day on Saturday, then drink with friends at night becoming moody and sarcastic. Since he lacked a strong sense of religion, he didn't want to get up Sunday mornings.
