The confessional game the school children played did not have the same effect for Florence, a non-believer, than the others. Florence said he didn't have any sins to confess, because God had sinned against him! Florence believed God had abandoned him by taking his parents when he needed them the most. Such heresy confused the children who pressured Antonio to deal Florence an extreme penance.
