What role does Ultima's owl play?

Its cries warn Ultima and the Marez family of impending danger. The owl is a vigilant guard for Antonio after he witnesses Lupito's death at the bridge and becomes emotionally wrought. It flies back to the Marez home forewarning Ultima of Lupito's murder.
