Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent and the forty-day period of fasting, prayer and contemplation to redemption. Ash Wednesday was the day Antonio received blackened cross on his forehead. It was a reminder that mortals are made from ashes and when they die they return to ashes and dust.
