Describe the relationship between Antonio's mother (Maria) and father (Gabriel).

Maria is the daughter of a farmer, whose family traditions are tied to the earth. She believes it is important to settle and raise her family in one location which has the greatest opportunities for her children. However, Gabriel is a vaquero (cowboy) at heart having lived and worked on llano (plains). It has been a sacrifice to leave the llano and settle his family in the town of Guadalupe. Their relationship is marked by tension and discord tempered by their love for their children.
